The short version
There are no accounts. We do not sell data, we do not build profiles of readers, and we do not share anything with data brokers. Your saved location never leaves your device.
Your location
If you search for a town or press “use my location”, the result is stored in your browser’s local storage on your own device. We do not copy it to a server and it is not attached to any identifier.
When you use browser geolocation, your coordinates are sent once to our server so we can look up the ground elevation there, because that lookup needs a federal elevation service. We use the coordinates for that request and do not store them.
Clearing your browser data removes the saved location entirely.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics 4 to count page views and a small number of events — advertising impressions and clicks, newsletter signups, and advertising inquiry submissions. This tells us how many people read the site and lets us give advertisers accurate figures.
Google sets cookies as part of this and processes the data on its own terms. If you would rather not be counted, browser tracking protection and ad blockers stop it, and nothing on this site breaks when they do.
Advertising
Advertising here is targeted on the weather, not on you. A campaign is shown because a river is rising or a hard freeze is forecast — conditions that are identical for every reader at that moment — not because of anything we know about who you are.
We count impressions and clicks in aggregate. Those counts contain no cookies, no identifiers and no IP addresses.
If a third-party ad network is ever enabled, it is disclosed here before it goes live, along with what it sets.
If you give us an email address for weather alerts, we use it to send those alerts and nothing else. We do not rent, sell or share the list. Every email has a one-click unsubscribe, and unsubscribing deletes the address.
Advertising inquiries are used to reply to you and are stored with our business records. They are not added to any mailing list.
What we never collect
- Accounts, passwords or identity information
- Payment details — there is nothing to buy here
- Precise location history
- Anything from anyone we know to be a child
